Birgit Ottermann joined ACDI as Adaptation at Scale in Semi-Arid Regions (ASSAR) communications officer in December 2016. The main focus of her job is to strategically lead the communication efforts of the ASSAR project and to maximise its research impact into policy and practice, within the project’s regional and global spheres of influence. Prior to this, she worked as communications officer in the Global Strategy and Visibility cluster of the Research Office at the University of Cape Town (UCT); and as web editor of the university's official website, while based at UCT's Communication and Marketing department. Birgit is a seasoned journalist and editor with a strong background in digital media, and has won a number of awards for her health reporting. She holds an honours degree in journalism from Stellenbosch University and a master's degree in music from the University of Cape Town. (In her previous career life, she was an opera singer).
